SIU Freezes 17 Homes and 7 Cars in R76.5m Eskom Fraud Probe

SIU Freezes 17 Homes and 7 Cars in R76.5m Eskom Fraud Probe — 1 of 12
1 / 12

South Africa’s Special Investigating Unit has secured a preservation order freezing assets worth about R76.5 million linked to businessman Siyabonga Moses Goodwill Nkosi and associated trusts. The order, granted by the Special Tribunal, covers 17 properties and seven luxury vehicles while the investigation continues. The probe found that Eskom officials at Kusile and Matla power stations approved inflated and irregular orders for relays between 2021 and 2023. They split purchase orders to stay below the R1 million threshold, abused informal tenders and uploaded false part numbers to shut out genuine suppliers. Much of the equipment was never delivered and remains unused. Nkosi, who is married to Instagram influencer Leleti Nkosi, is named both personally and as trustee of several trusts. The SIU alleges these trusts channelled proceeds from the corrupt contracts. All evidence of wrongdoing will be referred to the National Prosecuting Authority, and the SIU may initiate civil proceedings to recover state funds.

Absolutely, freezing those assets shows authorities mean business and can help tighten investigations against well-connected suspects.

I get your concern, but asset seizures alone won't guarantee deeper accountability. We need stronger legal checks too.

It seems unusual that all the assets belong to one individual, raising questions about the tribunal's overall asset tracing effectiveness.

I'm not convinced that seizing properties alone will address Eskom's deeper corruption challenges and systemic accountability issues.

Agencies should follow up with transparent reporting and use the freeze order to train teams on detecting hidden fraud assets.
