Iranian President Says Khamenei Privately Approved US Talks Despite Public Opposition
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian says the late Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, privately instructed officials to negotiate with the United States despite publicly rejecting direct talks with Washington. The comments have stirred controversy in Iran. The Government Information Council accused state broadcaster IRIB of censoring the part of Pezeshkian’s speech about the alleged private instruction. IRIB said it removed the remarks to avoid giving the impression of divisions within Iran’s leadership.
