Court Sets May 5 Hearing for Suit Seeking Deregistration of ADC and Other Parties
Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned a suit filed by the National Forum of Former Legislators (NFFL) to May 5. The suit seeks to deregister the African Democratic Congress, Accord Party, Zenith Labour Party and Action Alliance for allegedly breaching Section 225 of the 1999 Constitution. Parties must file responses by May 1. The plaintiffs have been granted leave to amend their originating summons to include additional political parties. They are asking the court to compel INEC to enforce constitutional requirements, and seek injunctions to prevent the affected parties from fielding candidates until they comply fully with the law. The suit argues that allowing these parties to contest would overcrowd ballots, waste public resources and undermine electoral integrity. The author warns that these moves by former legislators risk turning Nigeria into a one-party state under the ruling party. They describe the NFFL’s actions as a shameless attempt to stifle opposition and caution that such tactics may ultimately backfire.
