Nollywood Legend Dr. Kola Oyewo Dies at 80

Dr. Kola Oyewo, the veteran Nollywood actor, dramatist, filmmaker and scholar, has passed away at the age of 80. Actor Kunle Afod announced the news on social media. Oyewo began his acting journey in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group. He rose to fame for his portrayal of Odewale in Ola Rotimi’s play “The Gods Are Not to Blame,” earning recognition across Africa. He appeared in iconic films and series such as Saworoide, Sango, Koseegbe and Super Story. His work in Yoruba-language cinema helped shape Nigeria’s movie industry. A PhD graduate in Drama from the University of Ibadan, Oyewo lectured at Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer’s University and Elizade University. Through teaching and mentorship, he inspired generations of actors and scholars.
