Nigeria Secures UN Support for Tinubu’s State Police Reform
Nigeria is seeking international support for its proposed state police reform. The Permanent Representative at the UN said the plan will boost public trust, operational efficiency and crime prevention. President Tinubu aims to decentralize policing and strengthen accountability. At a New York meeting, Nigerian officials hosted UN Police Advisers and outlined plans to provide logistics, equipment and training for the new structure. The envoy highlighted that over 13,000 Nigerian officers have served in UN peacekeeping missions in Liberia, Sudan and Mali. He urged the UN and other partners to help Nigeria modernize policing strategies against cybercrime and emerging threats. The Nigerian Senate is working on a legal framework to back the state police, while the Inspector-General of Police will deepen engagement with international stakeholders. Officials say the reform will close gaps between communities and law enforcement, enhancing crime prevention and manpower deployment across the country.
