Mastercard Unveils Virtual Cybersecurity Hubs for Nigeria and South Africa

Mastercard Unveils Virtual Cybersecurity Hubs for Nigeria and South Africa

Mastercard has launched the Africa Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence, a pan-African initiative to help banks, government agencies and businesses share threat intelligence and strengthen their defences. Timed to Mastercard CEO Michael Miebach’s visits to both countries, the programme carries endorsements from Presidents Ramaphosa and Tinubu. It builds on commitments made during last year’s G20 in Johannesburg and recent talks in Abuja. Delivered through connected digital platforms rather than a physical facility, the centre will offer cyber-risk analysis for up to 50 organisations and provide an Africa-focused threat-intelligence feed from Recorded Future. The launch marks Mastercard’s expansion into security and intelligence services alongside its payment network. Since 2018, the company says it has invested over $12.6 billion in cybersecurity to protect one of the world’s fastest-growing digital economies.

It's interesting, but I wonder if virtual centres alone can really address deep structural gaps in threat intelligence sharing.

Launching virtual hubs sounds good on paper, but without regular audits and local expertise, it risks becoming another siloed initiative.

Banks and agencies should pair these centres with hands-on training workshops to ensure staff can fully utilise shared intelligence.
