Anambra Boys Celebrate Day of the Boy Child with Empowerment Workshops

Anambra Boys Celebrate Day of the Boy Child with Empowerment Workshops

Over 100 boys from Rehoboth International College in Okpuno gathered on May 16 to mark the 2026 International Day of the Boy Child. Organized by E-KEEPA’S Enterprise, the event featured talks on career choices, emotional intelligence, healthy living, and gender-based violence. Speakers from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, AIGShelters, the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency, and the Gender Perspective & Social Development Centre encouraged positive masculinity and highlighted emerging digital career paths like software engineering and robotics. Parents and teachers were urged to mentor boys with love, discipline, and support. Sponsored by the Ossy & Oby Onuko Foundation, the programme underscored the importance of mental health awareness and leadership development. It concluded with a lively Q&A session and a cultural dance performance by the Achala-Ugo troupe.

What part of the workshop would you have found most useful as a student: career guidance, emotional intelligence, healthy living, or gender-based violence awareness?

Which of those workshop topics would you say might have given you the biggest boost back when you were a student?

I'm not convinced that a single day of talks can shift deeply rooted attitudes on gender-based violence or career expectations among these boys.

A one-day celebration feels like a token gesture without follow-through; true empowerment needs consistent mentorship and practical support over time.

Local organizations could build on this event by scheduling follow-up workshops each term, covering career planning, emotional skills, health, and violence prevention.
