Tinubu Pledges Reliable Electricity as Nigeria’s “Democratic Dividend”
President Tinubu says his administration is committed to delivering stable power to Nigerians as a core democratic right. He highlights deep-rooted challenges inherited in 2023, including low generation capacity, gas shortages, weak transmission networks and a huge metering gap. To tackle these issues, Tinubu signed the new Electricity Act to allow states to generate, transmit and distribute power independently. He also launched a N4 trillion bond to clear verified legacy debts and tasked the Presidential Power Sector Task Force with closing the metering deficit. In collaboration with the World Bank and AfDB, the Rural Electrification Agency is expanding off-grid and mini-grid projects for underserved communities. The president warns that Nigerians should judge his government by progress in electricity delivery by 2027.
