Kwankwaso’s Record Under Scrutiny: How Kano’s Domestic Debt Soared Over 1000%
As many Nigerians hail Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso as messiahs for our nation, I can’t help but revisit their records as state governors. A fact check by TheCable shows that while external debt fell during Kwankwaso’s second term, domestic debt in Kano jumped from ₦5.87bn in 2011 to ₦65bn in 2015—a 1008% increase. His deputy and successor, Abdullahi Ganduje, later admitted the borrowing was planned with Kwankwaso’s full knowledge. Local contractors also protested unpaid bills and even called for anti-corruption probes after many were left with debts and health crises due to delayed payments. Kwankwaso’s claim that he never borrowed a naira doesn’t hold against data from the Debt Management Office and eyewitness accounts. If we’re serious about choosing leaders who can steer Nigeria out of its economic and security challenges, we owe it to ourselves to demand accountability and transparency.
