FG enforces strict ‘No Certification, No Entry’ rule for vehicle imports

On Tuesday, the Federal Government unveiled the SON–NADDC Vehicle Conformity Assessment Programme (VehCAP). It bars all new and used vehicles from entering Nigeria without pre-shipment certification. The Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, John Enoh, said VehCAP is now government policy and takes immediate effect. Any vehicle without valid certification will be refused clearance, seized, or sanctioned under existing laws. Enoh urged a balanced approach to used vehicle imports by respecting age limits and supporting local assembly capacity. Key agencies—including Customs, the CBN, FRSC and NPA—will coordinate to enforce certification from port clearance through registration. The initiative aims to boost road safety, curb substandard imports and align Nigeria’s vehicle sector with global standards, reinforcing President Tinubu’s industrialisation agenda.
