North-East Records Nearly 2,000 IED Attacks from 2017 to 2024, Report Reveals
A 2025 Nigeria Mine Action review shows 1,934 improvised explosive device incidents across the North-East between 2017 and 2024. Road-emplaced IEDs accounted for the bulk of attacks each year. The highest toll was in 2017 with 381 incidents. Numbers fell to 185 in 2022 before rising slightly to 191 in both 2023 and 2024. Body-borne and vehicle-borne devices remained far fewer than road IEDs throughout the period. Insurgent groups have constantly adapted their methods—from wire and telephone triggers to pressure plates and layered devices—to evade countermeasures and increase lethality. At a Counter-Improvised Explosive Device workshop in Abuja on March 11, 2026, Maj Gen Adamu Laka of the National Counter-Terrorism Centre warned that evolving IED tactics remain one of the most devastating threats to troops, civilians and critical infrastructure.
