Minister Alake Highlights SOMEA’s Role in Promoting Safe, Sustainable Mining

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development says the Solid Minerals Excellence Awards will encourage safe and responsible mining across Nigeria. He noted that the initiative aligns with national goals to boost transparency, attract investors and position Nigeria as a competitive mining destination. The awards, scheduled for May under the theme “Unlocking the Future,” will recognise companies that excel in sustainable operations, safety standards and contributions to sector growth. Categories include Leading Mining Company of the Year and Excellence in Sustainable and Safe Operations. The Minister emphasised that as Nigeria moves beyond oil, the awards will mark a milestone in the sector’s reform. He said it sends a clear message that Nigeria’s mineral wealth is open for business.

I'm not convinced awards can drive safety improvements without real accountability and enforcement.

It sounds promising, but past initiatives didn't always translate to real enforcement and accountability on mining sites.

I dey worry say awards alone no go solve deep-rooted safety issues unless regulations and penalties are actually enforced.

Mining companies should start regular safety audits and community outreach programs even before awards criteria are announced.
