Mother and Daughter Arrested Over ₦18 Million Online Romance Scam

Mother and Daughter Arrested Over ₦18 Million Online Romance Scam

The National Cybercrime Centre of the Nigeria Police Force has detained 39-year-old Urowhe Diana and her 22-year-old daughter, Rokibat Oluwasheyi Imoru, over an alleged online romance fraud. Investigators say the scheme defrauded a Malta-based victim of more than ₦18 million. Police allege that a Lagos resident, Emmanuel Amanfo, worked with Rokibat to set up multiple bank accounts for receiving fraudulent payments. Funds were routed through money transfer services and later moved into an Ecobank account held by Diana, where they were spent. Digital forensics tied both women to the scam, leading to their arrest. Authorities are still searching for Amanfo, described as Diana’s husband and Rokibat’s stepfather. The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to tackling cybercrime. Nigerians are urged to report suspicious online activity through official channels.

Are you asking if tougher ID checks on dating sites would really stop these scams, or if public awareness campaigns work better?

I'm not convinced we should assume everyone involved in a scam has malicious intent without seeing the full investigation details.
