FG Greenlights United Nigeria Airlines’ Flights to New York, Dubai and Canada
The federal government has approved new international routes for United Nigeria Airlines, including New York, Dubai and Canada, as part of efforts to boost domestic carriers’ share of global traffic. Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo unveiled two new Boeing 737-800NG jets at the airline’s fleet launch. He said the approvals will help local airlines compete with foreign operators that currently carry up to 95% of outbound passengers from Nigeria. President Tinubu has also backed plans to establish a government-supported aircraft leasing company to ease financing challenges for Nigerian airlines. The policy focuses on removing barriers and empowering private carriers rather than reviving a state-owned airline. The government is working with Abia State on a new international airport hub for United Nigeria Airlines, and plans to turn Enugu’s Akanu Ibiam Airport into a dedicated cargo centre with direct China flights. Stakeholders highlight the need for continued investment in modern aircraft and technical training to sustain sector growth.
