No Woman Should Die Bringing Life: Nigeria’s Urgent Call on Safe Motherhood Day
Every pregnancy deserves a safe outcome. Yet in Nigeria, too many mothers still lose their lives to preventable complications. As we observe National Safe Motherhood Day, we face a stark reality: postpartum haemorrhage remains a leading cause of maternal death. Simple measures like accurate blood loss measurement and rapid-response treatment can save lives, but they are not yet routine in many facilities. The World Health Organization–backed E-MOTIVE protocol shows us a clear path. Calibrated drapes and a bundle of emergency treatments enable quicker detection and response. But guidelines alone are not enough. To turn policy into practice, Nigeria must train and equip frontline workers, strengthen referral systems, and ensure every facility can manage obstetric emergencies. Maternal health must be a shared national priority—no mother should die while giving life.
