Ghana’s Rent Commissioner Rules Landlords Must Get Approval Before Raising Rent
As property rents climb across Ghana, Acting Rent Commissioner Frederick Opoku reminds landlords that the law bars any rent increase without a certificate of assessment from the Rent Control Department. He explains that this rule often goes unenforced because many landlords are unaware of it. The department must first inspect the property and issue a formal approval before any new rent rate can take effect. Once a certificate is granted, landlords cannot raise rents again until they obtain a fresh assessment. Opoku highlighted these requirements in a recent social media interview.
