FAAN Probes Viral Video of Passenger’s Bag Search at Osubi Airport

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has ordered an investigation into a viral video showing an Aviation Security officer manually searching a female passenger’s bag at Osubi Airport, also known as Alfred Diete-Spiff Airport, in Delta State. The passenger alleged that officials removed tins of milk, sardines and other canned items from her luggage during screening. She questioned why her bag was not scanned and protested the manual search, which led to a verbal disagreement inside the terminal. FAAN said its management has begun a fact-finding process to determine whether the officer acted in line with operational procedures, service standards and the agency’s code of conduct. It added that any staff found to have breached the rules would face appropriate disciplinary action.

A viral video can raise valid concerns, and it is good that FAAN says it has ordered an investigation into what happened.

The video alone may not show the full security context, but that does not remove the need for a clear and fair review.

FAAN should explain the search procedure, publish the investigation outcome, and ensure officers communicate clearly with passengers during checks.
