DNA Confirms Remains of Missing Journalist Pelumi Onifade After EndSARS Protests
Six years after Pelumi Onifade vanished while covering the October 2020 EndSARS protests, a DNA result has confirmed that the remains recovered after the unrest belong to him. The Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre presented the finding in Coroner Court, reducing Mrs Adebose Onifade to tears. The match follows a 2024 Federal High Court order for a coroner’s inquest into Pelumi’s death. In May 2026, lawyers from Media Rights Agenda forced LASUTH to release the autopsy report on the body labelled No. 1385. At a June hearing, Magistrate Temitope Oladele warned the hospital to comply or face coercive court measures. The case resumes on July 7, 2026, as the family seeks closure and accountability for the journalist’s disappearance and death during the protests.
