Ogun Court Removes Oniro of Iro After 13 Years, Declares Installation Illegal
The Ogun State High Court in Ota has nullified the appointment of Oba Najeem Aromaye as the Oniro of Iro and ordered him to vacate the throne 13 years after his installation. In Suit No AB/292/2013, Justice O.O. Osunfisan ruled that Aromaye’s nomination and installation violated the approved chieftaincy declaration. The court set aside his appointment and awarded ₦1 million in costs against the defendants. The lawsuit, brought by members of the Oleyo Ruling House, challenged Aromaye’s claim to the stool. The Oleyo family had formally declined its turn due to lack of a qualified candidate and ceded it to the Apetu-Mata house. However, the Iro Council of Chiefs presented Aromaye as an Oleyo nominee, a decision opposed by Oleyo members who stated he did not belong to any recognised ruling house.
