Sanwo-Olu Announces ₦50,000 May Bonus for All Lagos State Workers Amid Rising Costs
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved an extra ₦50,000 salary support for every state worker in May to help cushion the impact of higher living expenses, fuel price hikes and global economic pressures. Speaking at the Workers’ Day celebration in Onikan, and represented by Deputy Governor Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, the governor described public servants as the “living infrastructure” of Lagos. He noted that this across-the-board intervention will cover all grade levels and remains subject to future review. Sanwo-Olu highlighted past welfare measures including the country’s highest minimum wage, expanded healthcare coverage through the Lagos State Health Management Authority, the Ilera Eko Easy Pay health insurance system, and prompt pension disbursements exceeding ₦1 billion. Labour leaders welcomed the bonus but urged an upward review of the minimum wage to reflect current inflation.
