My Unforgettable Connection with George H.W. Bush

Today marks the posthumous birthday of President George Herbert Walker Bush. I remember him and give thanks for the role he played in my life. Back in 2000, when I was an undergraduate at Ife, he intervened through unlikely means. As former CIA director, vice president and president, he understood the spiritual attack I faced from a pastor under surveillance in Nigeria. Through his guidance, I was spared an assassination plot during my NYSC. I believe President Bush acted as my Obatala, the benevolent elder who brought me protection and new purpose. May his soul rest in perfect peace until we meet again.

What do you think motivated President Bush to step in at Ife and help you back in 2000?

Could you clarify what led you to believe genuine concern drove his intervention rather than political gain?

It's interesting a former CIA director would personally intervene in a student's life overseas, that seems quite extraordinary.

Perhaps that story feels a bit romanticized, and there may be other factors worth mentioning before we take it at face value.

Considering his involvement, you could write a short memoir of that moment to offer insight to fellow scholars facing unexpected mentors.
