Keke and Okada Resurgence in Abuja Triggers Security, Corruption Alarm

Residents and commuters have noticed keke and okada operators returning to Abuja’s restricted zones, including Jabi and Arab Junction. These vehicles were previously banned to reduce accidents and curb crime. Unverified reports allege police at Lifecamp Junction collect ₦500 bribes from riders, while Utako Division officials may have taken up to ₦500,000 to permit operations from Arab Junction to Karmo. Such claims point to enforcement gaps and compromised accountability. This situation threatens public safety, undermines law enforcement credibility, and risks eroding trust in FCT policies. Immediate action is needed to restore order. We call on the FCT Minister to investigate these allegations, reinforce the ban where required, and hold any compromised officials accountable.

I dey wonder, have commuters shared if these keke and okada make their daily trips faster or tighter security checks slow them down?

It's suspicious that police would ignore the ban and reportedly collect ₦500 at Lifecamp Junction without any public explanation.

I doubt banning keke and okada truly reduced crime or accidents; stricter licensing and enforcement would have been more effective.

Operators, commuters, and authorities could collaborate on clear safety standards, proper permits, and transparent checkpoint procedures to curb corruption.
