Former Umuneochi Council Chairman Demands Probe After Umuahia Duplex Burns Down
Chief Ifeanyi Madu’s duplex at Umuobia Housing Estate in Umuahia was gutted by fire in the early hours of April 10. The former Umuneochi Local Government chairman, who lives abroad, says the circumstances are suspicious and has called for a thorough investigation. According to Chief Madu, his brother first learned of the blaze around 3:00 a.m. from their sister in Enugu. By the time he reached the scene, nothing of value remained. Witnesses and the family are puzzled by how the fire raged uncontested for so long, especially since power had been disconnected weeks earlier. Mrs. Madu and their house girl raised the alarm when smoke began choking the upstairs bedroom. Neighbours helped douse the flames before the state fire service arrived. The fire officer confirmed the prompt response prevented further spread, but says the cause is still under investigation. Chief Madu recalls a past threat to burn down the house and fears for his family’s safety. He urges police and fire authorities to uncover the source of the inferno and ensure justice is served.
