Cillian Murphy: From Peaky Blinders to Oscar-Winning Oppenheimer

Cillian Murphy: From Peaky Blinders to Oscar-Winning Oppenheimer

Cillian Murphy is an Irish actor and producer born on 25 May 1976 in Douglas, Cork. He began in theatre in 1996 and broke into film with roles in 28 Days Later and Breakfast on Pluto, earning early award nominations. His long collaboration with director Christopher Nolan includes memorable turns as Scarecrow in The Dark Knight trilogy, a lead in Inception, and a Best Actor Oscar for playing J. Robert Oppenheimer in 2023. Murphy became a global star as Tommy Shelby in the BBC series Peaky Blinders (2013–2022). Off-screen, he has campaigned for youth voting in Ireland, supported homeless rights, and backed social causes like UNESCO’s family research initiatives. He studied law briefly before committing to acting and once turned down a five-album music deal to protect his songwriting. Murphy married artist Yvonne McGuinness in 2004 and they have two sons. A former long-time vegetarian turned pescatarian, he credits an early Catholic upbringing for shaping his moral outlook.

Who else has followed Cillian's career since his theatre beginnings through 28 Days Later and on to Oppenheimer?

Definitely, it's been great watching him grow from those early roles up to Oppenheimer.

It's interesting, though, whether his understated style really fits both Peaky Blinders and a big screen biopic like Oppenheimer.

I'm not sure his work with Nolan outshines his standout performance in Breakfast on Pluto.
