Why Do We Praise Politicians for Spending Our Tax Money?

I saw the Coastal Road named after President Tinubu. It’s not unusual—public works everywhere often bear politicians’ names. These projects are funded with tax revenue and public resources, not personal savings. Politicians approve budgets and oversee implementation. They don’t design roads or pour concrete. Yet citizens thank leaders for spending their own money. That’s not generosity—it’s exactly what we elected them to do. In many African countries, officials enjoy convoys, allowances and luxury, while locals see little benefit from resources in their communities. Still, politicians claim credit for projects built with the public’s funds.

What if we asked why we applaud politicians for projects funded entirely by our tax contributions instead of praising ourselves?

It seems politicians love to brand public works as personal achievements, but that framing hides citizens' real contribution.

I see the point about tax funding, but politicians often navigate complex approvals and risks that citizens don't consider.

We fit start by publishing detailed project budgets publicly, schedule regular town hall updates, and track all spending in real time.
