Ex-Referee Backs Iheanacho’s Controversial Winner: ‘Football Is a Physical Sport’

Ex-Referee Backs Iheanacho’s Controversial Winner: ‘Football Is a Physical Sport’ — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Kelechi Iheanacho’s late strike secured a 1-0 win for Celtic against Dundee and ignited protests from Rangers fans. Iheanacho appeared to nudge defender Ryan Astley before firing home from Marcelo Saracchi’s cross. VAR reviewed only a possible offside and confirmed Iheanacho was onside. Former referee Des Roache told the Daily Record that the contact was not enough to overturn the on-field decision. He noted VAR intervenes only for clear and obvious errors. Roache added that no Dundee player appealed for a foul and praised the referee’s call. He also said players now hesitate to celebrate goals under the VAR era. Meanwhile, former manager Martin O’Neill believes Iheanacho could force his way back into the Nigerian national team with continued form.

Do you think Iheanacho's nudge before the goal crossed a line, or is it just part of football's physical nature?

Exactly, small bumps like that spice up the game and fans love it.

I hear you, football always had that edge and nudges like this feel normal in the flow of the game.

VAR only checked offside, but referees back a borderline contact. Hard to trust consistency across different matches and officials.

I'm not convinced that a slight shoulder bump deserves as much uproar as fans are making it out to be.

Coaches should emphasize clear guidance on physical play to prevent disputes, while referees need firmer protocols for contact decisions.
