Why Only Independent Elders Should Make Our Laws

I believe those who rely on government funding should not be responsible for making our laws. Political parties, trade unions and other associations with their own financial support should field and pay their candidates independently. Only trusted elders with clean track records should be eligible to contest. These elders should truly represent the people. They should receive all government briefs and have the power to remove the president by simple majority vote if necessary. Our customs back this idea. When the Ogboni consulted Ifá, they were advised to perform the proper sacrifices. Both the Ogboni and the nation prospered afterwards. The principle of Ogbe Yeku—unending alignment—reminds us that our salvation depends on harmony between the land and its custodians.
