Post Security Personnel to Their Home States for Stronger Security
I propose that all security personnel be posted to their states of origin to improve trust and accountability. Properly regulated private security firms and responsible citizens should also bear arms after thorough background checks. In the past, Yoruba communities were organized for their own defence, with men and women volunteering to protect their land. Private militias once complemented formal forces, showing how local ties can strengthen security. Today, non-native soldiers risk betraying host communities. Historical coups of 1966 and tensions under Gowon’s administration highlight how outsiders can undermine stability. Assigning officers to their home states would reduce these vulnerabilities. If Nigeria cannot maintain unity under these reforms, I accept that a peaceful breakup may relieve national strains. Empowered states could then manage security and resources more effectively.
