Senate Pushes Bill to Force Social Media Giants to Open Nigerian Offices
The Senate held a public hearing in Abuja on a proposal to require global social media platforms operating here to establish physical offices in Nigeria. The session was organised by the Senate Committee on Information and Communications Technology and Cyber Security. Sponsored by Senator Ned Nwoko, the bill seeks to amend the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023. It would make local offices mandatory for companies like Facebook and Twitter. Proponents say this will deepen engagement, create jobs, boost tax revenue, and support AI and engineering research. Nwoko cited examples from the UK, India, South Africa and the UAE, where such requirements attracted investments and local operations. The committee will review submissions from stakeholders before sending its report to the full Senate for further action.
