Fani-Kayode Declares Obi ‘Will Never’ Be President Over June 12 Remarks

Fani-Kayode Declares Obi ‘Will Never’ Be President Over June 12 Remarks

Ambassador-designate Femi Fani-Kayode has hit out at former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi. He warned that Obi would never lead Nigeria after the latter’s comments on the June 12 pro-democracy struggle. Obi had criticized some activists from the Abacha era, suggesting they betrayed democratic ideals. He wrote that they were “worse than the man they opposed,” referring to late General Sani Abacha. FFK called Obi’s words an “affront” to those who died resisting military rule. He said they wounded the memory of pro-democracy heroes and described the remarks as “unacceptable” and “despicable.” In the view of many critics, Obi aligned himself with Abacha by attacking his own generation of activists. They argue this undermines his presidential ambition, insisting he has lost moral authority and will never become Nigeria’s leader.

How do you think Fani-Kayode's warning affects Obi's reputation among younger voters who value June 12 as a democratic symbol?

True, that warning could dent Obi's image with youth who hold June 12 dear.

Younger voters often judge Obi by his actions, not just Fani's opinion, so his reputation among youth may stay strong.

It's interesting that Fani-Kayode equates Obi's critique of Abacha-era activists with disloyalty to the June 12 cause.

I'm not convinced Obi's comment really disqualifies him from leadership; political debates thrive on challenging past actions.

Rather than dismissing Obi outright, stakeholders should focus on policy proposals that resonate with those still moved by June 12's legacy.
