Ikoyi Court Sends Lagos Socialite to 15 Years for Cocaine Export

Ikoyi Court Sends Lagos Socialite to 15 Years for Cocaine Export

Justice Dehinde Dipeolu of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi has sentenced Funmilola Arike Ogbuaya, known as Ariket, to 15 years in prison for exporting 1.595 kg of cocaine to Saudi Arabia. The court imposed concurrent 15-year terms on counts of conspiracy, possession and illegal exportation, effective from her arrest on 19 May 2017. The case arose after co-defendant Odeyemi Omolara, also called Ariyo Monsurat Olabisi, was arrested at Murtala Muhammed International Airport on 23 February 2017. During interrogation, she confessed that Ogbuaya supplied her with the illicit substance. Witnesses, including the arresting officer and a security guard, testified that Ogbuaya transported Omolara to the airport and received the same bag used for the export. Ogbuaya denied involvement, saying she only gave Omolara ₦10,000 for financial help and dropped her at the airport while travelling to Ajase in Benin. After reviewing evidence and defense pleas for mercy, the judge found her guilty on all counts and handed down the sentence in line with the law.

What do you think spurred the court to hand down such a long sentence for that export operation?

Are you asking which legal factors or case details might have led the court to impose a 15-year term?

I get your skepticism. They probably imposed that term to deter wealthy traffickers from big export schemes.

It seems surprising that nearly one and a half kilos of cocaine led to fifteen concurrent years behind bars.

I'm not convinced harsh sentencing alone will curb this level of trafficking across borders.

Officials should strengthen customs checks and community outreach to deter similar smuggling schemes before they reach court.
