10 Concerning Trends in Today’s Nigerian Churches
I’ve noticed several practices in our churches that seem more about show than true worship. I’m not criticizing faith itself, but some trends need a closer look. 1. Media teams focusing on cameras and cables during service instead of engaging spiritually. 2. Bouncers and hype men at church entrances, giving a party or club vibe. 3. ‘Spiritual’ seminars with table bookings, price tags and worldly event styles. 4. Online “masterclasses” on spiritual gifts or ministries that charge high fees or foreign currency. 5. Tickets sold for gospel concerts, turning worship into a ticketed event. 6. Awards celebrating “Christian celebrities,” which can breed pride and jealousy. 7. Clique and tribal mentality among spiritual “sons” and “fathers.” 8. Attendees more interested in photos of ministers or dancing than hearing the Word. 9. Honoring visiting preachers over one’s own local pastor. 10. Inviting politicians, comedians and entertainers onto the sacred pulpit. Have you seen these in your church? What other issues concern you?
