Which Tech Skill Can a Nigerian Computer Engineering Student Learn to Stay Ahead of AI?

Which Tech Skill Can a Nigerian Computer Engineering Student Learn to Stay Ahead of AI? — 1 of 2
1 / 2

I’m an HND1 Computer Engineering student at Federal Polytechnic Nekede. Our curriculum uses old hardware and outdated courses. I don’t want to graduate and start from zero. I need one skill that: 1. Aligns with Computer Engineering studies 2. Pays well in Nigeria (freelance or entry job) 3. Has international demand (so I can earn in dollars) 4. Is AI-resistant (AI should help, not replace the role) I’m weighing four options: 1. Embedded Systems/IoT with Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi – is there real money in Nigeria beyond school projects? 2. DevOps/Cloud Engineering with AWS, Docker, Linux, CI/CD – strong global demand and remote pay. 3. Cybersecurity as a SOC analyst or ethical hacker – can you start without a degree, and what’s the entry path in Nigeria? 4. Embedded Software/Firmware in C/C++ – are Nigerian companies hiring for low-level microcontroller work? I can commit 2–4 hours on weekdays, full weekends, and up to ₦200k for training. Which of these makes the most sense? If you know a better skill I missed, please share it and suggest a first course or project to get started. I’ll update this thread with my progress so other students can learn too. Thanks in advance for your help—no abuse, please.

I feel you—getting decent GPU or compatible libraries on old machines really slows down experiments and learning pace.

It's surprising the polytechnic still uses such old hardware, but maybe focusing on firmware development could bridge that gap.

Focusing solely on AI tools might not pay off; specialized hardware skills like FPGA design can fetch high freelance rates.
