EFCC Arrests Nigerian-American in $320,000 Mercedes Import Scam

EFCC Arrests Nigerian-American in $320,000 Mercedes Import Scam

A Nigerian-American man, Adegoke Oluwatobi Adams, was arrested by EFCC operatives at the Ilorin Zonal Directorate over an alleged cross-border vehicle import fraud valued at more than $320,000 (about ₦435 million). According to the anti-graft agency, Adams advertised a 2024 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG from the United States and collected payments from at least two Nigerian buyers — one paid $145,000 and another $175,000 — but the promised vehicle was never delivered. Further checks uncovered Adams’s prior criminal record for illegal vehicle acquisitions in the US. He remains in EFCC custody and will be arraigned once investigations conclude.

I agree strengthening collaboration with customs and tighter scrutiny of shipping documents will help prevent these scams.

Prospective car buyers should verify import documents and seller identities through official EFCC or customs channels before making any payments.
