Why Orunmila’s Divination System Uses Eight Bits
Why did Orunmila settle on an eight-bit system of divination? A two-, four-, or six-bit system can provide answers, while a 10-bit system would create more than 1,000 possible signs. The argument is that six bits may be too limited, whereas 10 bits would be unnecessarily difficult to learn. With eight bits, there are 256 possible combinations. This may offer enough depth to express complex ideas without making the system excessively large or stressful to master.
