South African Shot-Puter Blasts Poor Treatment at African Championships in Accra
Aiden Smith, who clinched gold in the shot put with a 20.01m throw at the Africa Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, has criticised the event’s living conditions. He says athletes expected hotel-standard rooms but found minimal bedding, no blankets and no air-conditioning remotes. Basic toiletries like toilet paper were not readily available, and tap water often failed to run. Smith also highlighted strict and poorly managed meal arrangements. He claims athletes were limited to one chicken bone or half an egg at breakfast, despite their high energy needs. Requests for extra portions were often denied. Despite these frustrations, Smith praised Ghana and said he plans to explore the country once competition ends.
