Courts Under Siege: Curbing Political Manipulation of Nigeria’s Judiciary
In Nigeria, courts are meant to protect the aggrieved. Yet politicians now misuse them as tactical weapons. Frivolous suits and parallel filings during elections and party disputes create confusion and delay. Despite clear Supreme Court rulings condemning such abuse, enforcement remains weak. Duplicate cases are often met with token penalties, emboldening politically exposed litigants. Legal practitioners share responsibility. The ethical duty of counsel extends beyond winning cases to upholding the system’s integrity. Disciplinary bodies must act more decisively and transparently. To restore public trust, courts should impose punitive costs and enforce procedural safeguards. Only then can Nigeria’s judiciary serve justice, not political expediency.
