CSOs Call Off Protest Over Mary Habila’s Death, Back Works Minister Umahi
A coalition of 300 civil society organisations has officially withdrawn its planned nationwide protest over the death of Mary Habila. The group says an independent fact-finding exercise cleared Minister of Works David Umahi of any wrongdoing. After on-the-spot assessments in Ebonyi State, stakeholder engagements and medical reviews, the coalition found no evidence linking the minister to the tragedy. It also affirmed the late Mary Habila’s existing health issues as a possible factor in her passing. The organisations stressed that every Nigerian deserves the presumption of innocence and urged citizens to avoid trial by media. They called on law enforcement to complete investigations without external pressure. In closing, the coalition commended the minister’s record on federal road and bridge projects. It extended condolences to the bereaved family and appealed for calm and respect for due process.
