Nelson Mandela’s 1990 Thank-You Tour: His First Visit to Nigeria After Prison
I first shared this thread in 2014 to mark the anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s passing. This video and photo collection capture his first trip to Nigeria on May 14, 1990, after 27 years in prison. Nigeria had provided funds, training and sanctuary to the ANC during the anti-apartheid struggle. Mandela had stayed with Chief Mbazulike Amaechi at Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe’s request in 1962. On this visit he met both to express his gratitude. The footage opens at the Presidential Wing of Murtala Muhammed Airport under a banner reading “Nigeria Salutes Nelson Mandela – A Man of Courage and Pride of Africa.” We then see the Minister of External Affairs, the Lagos State Governor, motorcycle and cultural escorts, and the Chief of General Staff welcoming Mandela.
