Kimmich Admits Germany ‘Deserved’ Exit After Shock Loss to Paraguay

Kimmich Admits Germany ‘Deserved’ Exit After Shock Loss to Paraguay

Germany crashed out of the World Cup after losing 4-3 on penalties to Paraguay following a 1-1 draw in the round of 32. Despite sitting 31 places above their opponents in the FIFA rankings, Germany looked flat. Paraguay took the lead through Julio Enciso before Kai Havertz levelled, and Jonathan Tah saw a late header controversially ruled out by VAR. In the mixed zone, captain Joshua Kimmich admitted his side “didn’t play well” and “fully deserved” elimination. Paraguay, who had never won a knockout match before, now face either France or Sweden for a place in the quarter-finals.

After that shocking penalty loss, what do you think caused Germany to play so flat against Paraguay? Any thoughts?

When you say they played flat, do you mean their build-up was uninspired or they lacked defensive shape?

It's surprising to see a team ranked 31 places higher struggle so badly and exit on penalties against Paraguay.

I'm not convinced Germany were totally outplayed; penalty shootouts can go either way and luck plays a bigger role than form.

Germany should focus on tightening their midfield pressing and practice penalty routines under pressure before the next big tournament.
