AGF Backs Legal Bid to Deregister ADC, Accord, ZLP and Other Parties
Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice has filed a notice at the Federal High Court in Abuja supporting a suit to deregister the African Democratic Congress alongside the Action Alliance, Action Peoples Party, Accord and Zenith Labour Party for alleged constitutional breaches. Invoking his mandate under Section 150(1) of the Constitution, the AGF argues that nonperforming parties crowd ballots, drive up election costs and create administrative headaches for INEC. He maintains that the commission has no discretion to retain parties that fail to meet constitutional thresholds. The filing also underscores the importance of institutional backing for citizens who lack the means to challenge violations without state support. It warns that INEC’s failure to act could itself amount to a breach of constitutional duty. This development adds a new chapter to ongoing debates over political party regulation and INEC’s enforcement powers under Nigeria’s electoral framework.
