Alan Autry: From NFL Quarterback to Fresno’s Two-Term Mayor
Carlos Alan Autry Jr., born July 31, 1952 in Shreveport, Louisiana, made his mark as an NFL quarterback, Hollywood actor and California politician. He rose to fame as Captain Bubba Skinner on the TV series In the Heat of the Night. Autry’s early years saw him playing high-school football in Riverdale, California. He earned a scholarship to the University of the Pacific and later suited up for the Green Bay Packers and B.C. Lions before shifting to acting. In Hollywood he appeared in films like Remember My Name and TV shows including Grace Under Fire and The A-Team. A born-again Christian, he overcame personal struggles and built a family life around his second wife, Kimberlee, and their children. In 2000, Autry was elected Republican mayor of Fresno and served two terms. After leaving office in 2009, he transitioned to radio, hosting shows on KYNO AM 940 and now on KXEX 1550 AM.
