Severe Hunger Hits Over 17 Million in Northern Nigeria’s Conflict Zones, WFP Warns
Before you blame President Tinubu, meet the woman in this photo. She cares for eight children in an IDP camp with almost no food. The World Food Programme says more than 17 million people across nine northern states now face crisis, emergency or catastrophic hunger. Violence from Islamist insurgents and armed gangs has displaced farmers and blocked aid. In Borno alone, over three million people are acutely food insecure, including 750,000 facing the most severe conditions. WFP says it can assist fewer than half of last year’s caseload without an additional $89 million for the next six months. Meanwhile, the Borno state governor has released and is rehabilitating 3,000 former Boko Haram fighters. But funding cuts and spreading violence have driven hunger to its worst level in nearly a decade.
