Dangote Plans East African Mega-Refinery in Tanzania with Kenya and Uganda

Aliko Dangote has announced a partnership with Kenya and Uganda to construct a major oil refinery in Tanzania. The project is modelled on his 650,000 barrels-per-day facility in Nigeria and could expand to 1.4 million barrels per day. Speaking in Nairobi at an infrastructure financing conference, Dangote said the venture will proceed once political support is secured. He expects the refinery to account for about 10% of US refining capacity and to include integrated petrochemical production. Early piling works are already underway. Dangote said local manufacturing, such as polypropylene production, is vital to shield African economies from global price shocks. He argued that value addition must stay on the continent. East Africa currently depends on Middle East imports, making the region vulnerable to supply disruptions.

Building a 1.4 million barrels per day refinery seems ambitious, especially considering regional infrastructure and potential political hurdles.

I wonder if focusing on refining capacity distracts from investing in greener energy alternatives, which might offer longer term stability.

Local businesses should prepare for potential supply chain shifts by exploring partnerships or storage options ahead of refinery operations.
