COOU VC Unveils Plan to Join Nigeria’s Top 10 Universities by 2027

The Vice Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University has announced a bold vision to place COOU among Nigeria’s top ten public universities and within the top 1,000 globally by 2027. She revealed these targets ahead of the university’s 16th convocation week. Since assuming leadership in late 2023 and confirmed in 2025, her administration has focused on three pillars—Value, Visibility, and Viability. Initiatives include a new Centre for Teaching and Learning, AI integration in classrooms, strict enforcement of academic ethics, and a “Genius Fund” to support indigent students. Convocation events will feature a Founder’s Day lecture by the EU Ambassador and a convocation address by the Polish Ambassador. Plans are underway to launch new faculties, expand distance learning, maintain affordable fees, and complete government-backed infrastructure projects across campuses.

Impressive target, but expecting COOU to join Nigeria's top ten within four years seems overly optimistic given existing infrastructure gaps.

Focusing on building research collaborations and upgrading labs now would be the most direct way for COOU to improve its academic standing by 2027.
