Lagos Bolsters Waste Management with 10 New Compactor Trucks Donation

Lagos Bolsters Waste Management with 10 New Compactor Trucks Donation

The Lagos State Government received ten new waste compactor trucks from the Lagos State Lottery and Gaming Authority. The donation will boost waste evacuation and sanitation across the city. Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, noted that Lagos generates over 13,000 tonnes of waste daily. He highlighted partnerships and reforms like private sector participation, expanded recycling programmes and marine waste teams in the drive toward a zero-waste economy. Agreements with local and international partners aim to divert 5,000 tonnes of waste from landfills each day. The new compactors will be deployed to high-waste areas to improve efficiency, reduce collection turnaround times and support cleaner neighbourhoods. The LSLGA’s CEO, Bashir Abiola Are, emphasised the agency’s commitment to environmental and social initiatives. He urged more stakeholders to partner with government efforts for a sustainable and cleaner Lagos.

It's great we have ten new trucks, but I wonder if this donation alone can really address the city's mounting waste challenges.

Relying heavily on external donations might distract us from fixing root issues like waste reduction and consistent recycling habits.

Consider community-led sorting stations and regular maintenance schedules to make the most of these new compactor trucks and improve overall sanitation.
