Under-15 RIYE Athletics Circuit Discovers Ogun’s Future Track Stars

Under-15 RIYE Athletics Circuit Discovers Ogun’s Future Track Stars — 1 of 2
1 / 2

The maiden under-15 RIYE Athletics Circuit is hailed as a crucial step in spotting and nurturing Nigeria’s next generation of champions. The competition’s grand finale took place at MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta. Officials say the championship has already identified athletes capable of representing Ogun State at next year’s National Youth Games in Delta and the Intermediate Competition in Lagos. The National Sports Commission pledges ongoing support for grassroots programmes that develop young talent nationwide. The event, initiated by the Special Adviser on Youth Development in Ogun State, brought together athletes from Remo, Ijebu, Egba and Yewa. Organisers plan to expand the circuit next year and offer continuous technical training to standout performers. Standout results included 14-year-old Olufunmilayo Kuku of Muslim Girls High School Ijebu-Ode, who swept the girls’ 100m, 200m and relay races. In the boys’ events, 13-year-old Sodiq Olaniyi of Luba Comprehensive High School excelled in sprints, while Ibrahim Abdul-Ahmed of Tai Solarin Federal University of Education Secondary School claimed gold in the boys’ 100 metres.

It's great they held the finale at MKO Abiola Sports Arena, but I wonder if this single event is enough to nurture lasting talent.

The circuit seems promising, but e no too clear how consistent follow-up support will reach all the young athletes after the finale.

Local sports clubs could collaborate with the RIYE organisers to provide regular training sessions and mentorship for promising under-15 athletes in Ogun.
