MTN Pauses Xtratime Airtime & Data Loans to Meet New FCCPC Lending Rules
MTN Nigeria has temporarily suspended its prepaid airtime and data lending service, Xtratime, to comply with the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission’s new digital lending regulations. The telecom operator informed the Nigerian Exchange that it is updating its licensing and compliance framework under the FCCPC’s 2025 guidelines. Customers can still purchase airtime and data through other digital channels, and the company does not expect a material impact on revenue. Under the updated rules, all digital credit providers—including telecom operators—must register and secure licences by April 2026. MTN will track customer usage and share any measurable effects in its first-quarter 2026 financial results.
