Did Peter Obi Just Shortchange the South East with a One-Term Promise?

Did Peter Obi Just Shortchange the South East with a One-Term Promise?

Peter Obi’s vow to serve only one term if elected president raises serious questions for the South East. On whose behalf did he agree to limit our region to just four years in office? Since 1960, no Igbo leader has held Nigeria’s presidency longer than six months. Other regions have built sustained influence through multiple terms and extended tenures. Why then should the South East accept a self-imposed expiry date? Who authorised this pact? Our governors, traditional councils, business elite or Ohanaeze? What strategic calculation supports a one-term deal instead of full political integration? A single four-year term risks weakening executive authority, inviting lame-duck politics and immediate succession battles. Should the South East settle for symbolic occupancy or fight for enduring influence and national respect?

How would limiting the presidency to one term actually benefit or hurt the South East region?

You're right to ask, a one-term presidency could curb power grab but might also stall long-term projects vital for South East development.

It's odd that no Igbo leader has stayed longer than six months, yet voters trust this one-term promise.

I'm not convinced a one-term limit automatically shortchanges the South East; four years could be enough to lay lasting groundwork.

Make una hold Obi to account with a detailed four-year blueprint and regular progress reports, so the South East sees real results.
