EFCC Chief: Pastors and Imams Detained, Some Convicted for Fraud

EFCC Chief: Pastors and Imams Detained, Some Convicted for Fraud

EFCC chairman Ola Olukoyede has revealed that several pastors and imams are currently in detention over fraud-related cases, and that others have already been convicted. He spoke at a business grant award ceremony, stressing that corruption extends beyond politics and corporate sectors into religious institutions. Olukoyede noted that the Companies and Allied Matters Act empowers regulators to intervene in religious bodies suspected of fraud or mismanagement. He also recounted a six-month EFCC investigation into a well-known cleric following reports of large foreign inflows. While the probe traced dollars and pounds “dropping like raindrops,” it found no evidence of wrongdoing. Olukoyede said EFCC’s mandate includes both enforcement and recognising faith leaders who demonstrate transparency and integrity.
